Religion and Ethnicities

Nicaragua has no official religion, although Roman Catholicism covers 58.5% of the population. This makes sense considering that Spain's main religion is also Roman Catholism. Niacargua was a part of Spain until a rebillion started on 15 September 1821. For the rest of the country, 12% is Atheism (meaning no religion), 37% Protestant, and 4% other (as shown in the graph). Other religions include Jehovah's Witnesses (form of Christianity that does not serve in the military nor donate blood for religious reasons), Buddhistss, Mormons, Mennonite, Bahai, Judiasm, and Muslims.

The majority of the Nicaraguan population are Mestizos (mixed Amerindian and European), roughly 69%. 17% of European origin, the majority of Spanish, German, Italian, English, Turkish, Danish or French ancestry. About 9% of Nicaragua's population are black and mainly reside on the country's Caribbean or Atlantic coasts. The black population is mostly composed of black English-speaking Creoles, who are the descendants of escaped or shipwrecked slaves; many carry the name of Scottish settlers who brought slaves with them, such as Campbell, Gordon, Downs and Hodgeson.
